I learned to ice skate when I was very little. My parents would take us, all bundled up, to a little pond near our house and we would skate around until it got to cold to be out anymore. I love skating, though I wasn’t amazing at it. The ice skating events were always my favorite of the winter Olympics, and I wished that I could do what those skaters did.
When I was in middle school I took ice skating lessons for a year. I learned a lot in that year, but I clearly was never going to make it the Olympics. (For one I didn’t start lessons until I was older than 4 haha.) But I still enjoy skating a lot. I love gliding over the ice, being able to move with the gentle push of a skate.
Since I have most away from the land of cold and snow to further south, ice skating is not as easy to do. I wish I still lived somewhere where they opened up the frozen swimming pond for skating, we would go in the evening after school. It was awesome skating in the dark (though the pond was lighted), and trucking into the warming house for cocoa and the fire when it got to cold. Once warm again we’d go back outside. It was so much fun, and nice to just get to skate all evening.
Some day I hope to live by a rink or pond that has open skate hours that aren’t before dawn or during the middle of the day. It has been years since I’ve skated, and I miss it.
