I’m sitting on the couch, worn from the errands we ran this afternoon, and I’m watching SB walk around the house dragging my purse and shaking my keys. Once in a while she takes a break to pull apart the diaper bag so there are things strewn everywhere. She’s making a mess.
But she’s not breaking anything. She’s not trying to pull out the nightlight or power cords. She’s not trying to get into the bathroom so she can drum on the toilet lid. She’s not pulling things out of the garbage. And perhaps most importantly, she’s not crying and needing me.
So I’m okay with the mess she’s making. I step in when she starts pulling wipes out of the package and when she finds a pen (her favorite!), but other than that I just let her be.
Around here “pick your battles” has become my motto lately and it has relieved a lot of stress. My child is learning to entertain herself and I can decompress and just watch. (Or even make dinner!) I try to be consistent with the battles I do fight so there are clear guidelines, but sometimes you just need a break.
