I love Christmas. It is filled with friends and family, and memories, and of course a wrapped present or two. But one of my favourite parts of Christmas time is decorating the tree. I love unwrapping the ornaments one at a time, and then finding the perfect spot on the tree to hang it. But I have a new(ish) reason for liking this part of the holiday now!
Starting in college, I began to collect ornament from places I traveled to. I figured that ornaments were something that I wouldn’t really need to find a place for in my home, they wouldn’t need dusting, and they would all be individual unlike thimbles or shot glasses. My only rule is that it has to say (not literally) something about the place, it can’t just be a cheesy ornament from the airport that doesn’t speak to me. Sometimes I can’t find one, so sadly I leave without one. This happened to me in Ireland, though I hope to return one day and remedy this.
Some of my ornaments are obvious as to their origin, such as the one I got from our honeymoon that has a picture of a beach and palm trees on it. But others aren’t so obvious, such as the golden pineapple we got from historic Williamsburg. (Here’s the reason behind that one.) My collection is growing slowly, but every Christmas I get to relive the great memories I have from my travels around the world.
Do you collect anything to remind you of memories?
