I like getting letters. I really like getting letters. Opening the mailbox and having a smiling letter look back at me instead of just a pile of bills and junk mail makes me very happy. Even if the letter is just a note to say hello.
I have liked writing letters as long as I can remember. When I was little I would write to my aunts and would get so excited when they wrote back. I loved having pen pals in school, and was always sad when they stopped writing. Now that I’m an adult, I still have a few pen pals, and I still love writing and receiving letters. I have a dear friends who only lives about 40 miles away, and we still write letters to each often.
In this technology age, where people don’t even call each other on the phone any more they just text, writing letters is quickly becoming (if it hasn’t already) a stone age method of communicating. It takes more effort than just typing some words on a screen (big or small) where spell check is your best friend. You don’t get an immediate reply to a letter because the mail system takes time.
My personal belief is that letters/handwritten notes are much more personal than an email or text message. It’s why I still write out my thank-yous by hand. It’s also why I still write letters! I figure I can’t be the only person who likes to get mail. Also, the more people that write letters, the longer we can keep the US Postal Service in business. 😉
